Life can sometimes utterly amaze you in the most abrupt and strangest of ways. In this case, it happened to an unnamed friend of mine.
One day his old landlord asked him if he wanted some surf magazines. Having a few subscriptions already, he understandably said, “no thanks.” Who needs more junk, right? Well, his landlord being insistent, asked again a week later. This time he said, “fine, I’ll take em.” So the landlord brings over this huge box full of “surf magazines.” My friend then looks inside the box and finds over 30 old SURFER Magazines dating as far back as 1961!!! In mint condition! They were just sitting in a box in his basement for all these years. (For those of you who don’t know, SURFER magazine started in 1960). What a lucky bastard he is!
Alas, with some pulling and prying, he kindly let me borrow one. Below is a photocopy I took from the Oct-Nov 1962 issue, vol 3, no.4. I believe this is the 9th issue of SURFER magazine. It’s a copy an early Rick Griffin cartoon. The issue previous had the famous Murphy SURFER cover (he has that one too).
